Flamenco Foundations is a class that teaches what I consider to be the rudimentary skills for building your dance and musical training in Flamenco. Whether you are in flamenco for recreation or profession the training should be the same. The goal in the training is to be able to learn and explore all the movements of the upper body, hands, turns and traveling patterns as it relates to the dance. As well, understanding that a dancer is a musician in flamenco and learning how to do all aspects of the footwork in direct relationship to the rhythms and choreographies. Finally, it is essential to understand the context of flamenco in relation to the culture in and outside of Spain. Most importantly, flamenco dancers need to be independent. That means being able to dance on their own and collaborate with live musicians. I like to think of this as dance ecology. Understanding the structure of the song, dance and rhythms will empower your dance and you!
